Brussels

Brussels is the capital of Flanders, Europe and the Kingdom of Belgium. It is situated at 100 km from the hotel Bonifacius in Bruges and can easily be reached by train or car. King Albert II and Queen Paola have there official residence in the Royal Palace in the centre of town but live in the Royal Palace in Laken.

A visit to Brussels begins at the ‘Market Square’ with its beautiful Town Hall and very impressive ‘Guild Houses’.

In a side street from the market you can find the famous statue of ‘Manneken Pis’, which is the mascot of Brussels. Around the market square there are a lot of nice restaurants. The Museum of Fine Arts, Ancient Art and Modern Art are not to be missed. The Flemish Parliament houses in Brussels, as well as the European Commission and the Council of the European Union, all situated around the Schumannplein.

But Brussels is also the city of the painter Magritte, of Horta (Art Nouveau), Tintin (Hergé) and last but not least Breughel.

A walk through the antiques district the ‘Zavel’ is very pleasant. The flagship stores of famous international designers are to be found around the Avenue Louise and the Dansaertstraat.

Just outside the city centre there's the Atomium, built in 1958 for the world expo.
