Antwerp

Who says Antwerp, immediately thinks of the Scheldt. Indeed, the history of Antwerp was and still is dominated by the presence of the Scheldt, which makes this city the most important port in Belgium. Antwerp can easily be reached by car (90km) or train (1 hour) from the luxury guesthouse Bonifacius in Bruges.

The Market Square is situated at a few metres from the Scheldt and in front of the City Hall (in Flemish-Italian style) you can find the statue of Brabo, of which the name ‘Brabant’ derived.

Antwerp has numerous museums, such as the Rubens’ House, where the famous painter Paul Rubens lived and worked. It is probably the most visited museum of the city, situated in a beautiful baroque building which houses a large collection of furniture and artefacts.

It is worthwhile to visit The Royal Museum of Fine Arts which comprises amongst others paintings of the Flemish Primitives. Contemporary Art is to be found in the MUHKA and passionates can visit the National Maritime Museum and the Diamond Museum. Indeed, Antwerp is the diamond city.

A visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady is not to be missed. It is a place where numerous works of art of Rubens can be admired.
