Ghent

Ghent is a beautiful medieval city at only 45km distance from the hotel Bonifacius Bruges and is easily reached by car (30 min.) or by train. Ghent is the capital of East-Flanders but is also a very dynamic college town.

You can stroll along the Graslei and Korenlei, where there are some of the nicest historic buildings.

The most important churches are St. Bavo’s Cathedral, where you can admire the famous painting of the Van Eyck Brothers, ‘The adoration of the mystic lamb’ and St. Nicholas' Church. The iconic Belfry has a tower of 95 meters.

The Castle of Counts was built by the Counts of Flanders. It is a fortress surrounded by water which houses the Historical Museum. Also a walk through the small medieval streets of the ‘Patershol’, an authentic district, is worthwhile.

Ghent offers a wide range of interesting museums: the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum SMAK (Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Museum of Ancient Art.

Gent is also renown for its ‘Ghent Festivities’. This feast for the people, and for the senses, sets the city aflame for 10 long days. It opens with a parade and closes with the day of the empty wallets'. What you will find between the two includes 10 Days Off, the International Street-theatre Festival and Puppet Buskers Festival, free musical performances on various stages in the centre, more than 700 theatre performances, exhibitions, guided tours and fireworks.
